Group fitness classes

The range of group fitness classes offered by most gyms and health clubs has increased dramatically in recent years. Whereas twenty or thirty years ago, your choice was usually limited to a generic "aerobics" class, with maybe the occasional yoga session, most clubs now offer dozens of different choices.

Group fitness classes are thus a staple of any club, and indeed, they are the most popular feature for many people. Being able to work out with others is a prime motivator for many people, making the chore of exercise a fun activity.

Looking at a list of group fitness classes shows how far we have progressed. The old generic "aerobics" has been replaced by everything from high impact to boxercise, over-50s sessions to pre and post natal.

This trend reflects two things - firstly, an understanding that one size does not fit all when it comes to exercise - people have different needs at different times in their lives. By reflecting this, clubs are better able to cater for the needs of their customers.

Secondly, we each have different likes and dislikes. Offering a range of different activities thus makes sense for clubs and gyms, because people will be more likely to attend if they enjoy what they are doing.

Finding an activity that you like will therefore make your workouts more fun, and more effective, giving you a powerful reason to get up off the couch and out the door.
